WHAT IS DOCUMENT M?

Part M of the UK Building Regulations sets the legal requirements for accessibility and usability within buildings. To assist in meeting these obligations, Approved Document M (commonly referred to as Doc M) provides practical guidance to assist architects, designers and developers. Adhering to the recommendations within Doc M is a common and accepted method to demonstrate compliance with the statutory requirements of Part M, ensuring spaces are truly accessible for everyone. In line with the Equality Act 2010, which requires reasonable adjustments to be made to physical environments to prevent disadvantage, Document M outlines clear specifications for inclusive design. For washrooms, this includes layout, dimensions, fittings and features that support independent use.
